Education and Advocacy
403bwise Website
Founded by two educators fed up with the lack of objective 403(b) information available to participants, 403bwise has been demystifying the 403(b) plan and advocating for better investment choices for K‑12 teachers since 2000.
I have handled all creative strategy and design implementation for the 403bwise brand and website for more than twenty years. The site has evolved through several redesigns in this time to respond to expanding engagement with teachers. This work has had a direct positive impact on the financial futures of thousands of K‑12 teachers.

The core educational content on the 403bwise website provides all the basics of what the plan is, the importance to teachers' retirements, and what fees to watch out for. Charts like the one on this screen provide a clear visual of the effect that high fee products can have on retirement savings outcome.

In 2019, I led a creative vision workshop when 403bwise transitioned to non-profit status, partnering with the executive director to co-create a strategy for increasing impact of the project. The most ambitious idea that came from this session was to begin a school district 403(b) plan rating project.

I guided the technical team in the massive data collection and mapping project to document and rate school district 403(b) plans. I was also responsible for the full design implementation of the related information dashboard and map. To date, more than 5,000 school district plans have been graded. These districts account for 59.6% of all public K-12 teachers. This is powerful data for illustrating the nationwide failings and successes of school district 403(b) plans, and has supported a number of successful district-level advocacy efforts for improving available retirement options.
